Rector's Update

October 20, 2016 by Barry Parker

At St. Paul’s last Sunday, we celebrated our 174th Vestry or Annual General Meeting. I know that I am tiresome in repeating this fact. However, in our transient, disposable and quite frankly, lonely world—to know that a faith community has pushed on together for all of these consecutive years is an incredible statement of faith!

St. Paul’s has experienced a lot of churn over the years—both in the Church and certainly in the world. Over these 17 decades of existence, we could name historic events that have significantly affected the m…

Ministry Fair

September 21, 2016 by Sandra Seaborn

As the Olympic coverage fades, one image continues to burn in my mind: Michael Phelps standing next to Simone Biles, full of smiles. In the photo they are dressed casually, standing almost as siblings, except that Phelps is a lot taller. Biles, even with her ponytail up high, doesn’t come close to his shoulders. Yet both athletes ended up decorated with medals – their near opposite bodies perfectly trained for their respective sports of gymnastics and swimming. The Bible often refers to the church as a body. A body made o…

One of the most intriguing books I read years ago is Robert Fulghum’s, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten: Uncommon Thoughts on Common Things. His theme is that the seemingly simplistic things we learned in kindergarten are necessary and vital if extrapolated into adulthood. He lists such mundane and “childish” things as: • share everything• play fair• don’t hit people • put things back where you found them• clean up your own mess• don’t take things that aren…

Updates from the Rector

August 21, 2016 by Barry Parker

As the summer days are rapidly coming to a close and the heat wave continues unabated, it is time for a brief update. This fall promises to be an exciting season of ministry for us all at St. Paul’s. Regardless that the thick stone walls of the large Church have retained so much heat over the course of weeks, the internal comfort of the worship space is now moderated by the massive 20-foot ceiling fans recently installed. The scaffolding is now removed and the immense cleanup continues. We are launching two major formation initi…

Learning to Pray From Scriptures

August 7, 2016 by Sandra Seaborn

Hungry? Wet? Burp? Sleep? Cold? Hot? Help! The cries of infants are fierce, but often their intent is unclear. Without words, the cry’s volume often increases until the caring adult responds to the precipitating problem. As the baby grows, so does the variety of noises and sounds the child can make. In time, the little mouths start repeating what they hear and forming their own combinations. In time words come out – to the great delight of the parents. I remember keeping a list of the words my kids knew at 12 and 18 months, amazed b…
