St. Paul's Has a Gym?
Drop In Sports

Mark your calendars. Every other Saturday morning beginning October 17 we will be hosting an adult (16+) drop-in sports program from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for the St. Paul’s community.

“This place has a gym? That is incredible!”

When we first started coming to St. Paul’s last September, we were surprised to hear the church has a gymnasium. We could hardly believe it. Right in the heart of downtown Toronto, an area where gym space is notoriously scarce, St. Paul’s has a beautiful full-size gym (if you have not seen it yet you can be forgiven, it’s a couple floors underground).

To us, one of the best, easiest, and most fun ways to meet people is through sports. There is something special about being on someone’s team, sharing a common goal, and working together. We find it really accelerates the process of making new friends. St. Paul’s is a big place, and we often find we know lots of faces, but not as many names as we would like to. This ministry will try to make the big community of St. Paul’s feel just a little smaller.

We attended Queen’s University together and saw firsthand how this type of ministry brings people together. We were both members of Athletes in Action, a group which “[uses] sports as a platform to help people answer questions of faith and to point them to Jesus”. In the same vein, we see this ministry as an opportunity to invite people who do not regularly attend church. After all, it’s a lot easier for someone to say yes to playing floor hockey, than it is to say yes to Sunday church service.

We are going to model drop-in sports after elementary school gym class (do not worry there will be no beep test). How will it be similar?

• Lots of variety, we will be playing something different every week. Suggestions are welcome!
• Everyone is welcome to play, regardless of their skill level.
• We will be having a blast; positive attitudes are encouraged.

Rumour has it, we will be playing dodgeball week one. If you are like us and have been patiently waiting since Grade 7 to play dodgeball again, this is your chance. See you there!

P.S. If you have any questions, or want to be kept up to date when drop-in sports is happening, feel free to send us an email.
